September 11th Remembrance

Remarks by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Arnold A. Chacón
September 11, 2009

Today marks 8 years since the terrorist attacks on the United States that killed thousands of innocent people from more than 90 countries. For Americans, September 11 will always be a day of sadness and remembrance. This year, however, marks the first occurrence of the National Day of Service and Remembrance during which we honor the heroes of 911 and the sacrifices of our countrymen, law enforcement officers and firefighters by dedicating ourselves to public service in our communities.

I ask that you consider ways that you can serve your community through volunteer work and thus perpetuate and demonstrate the values of neighborly concern and mutual assistance on which the United States of America was founded. Soon you will be hearing ways that this Embassy will serve those in need in Spain.

Let’s please take a moment to stop and remember that terrible day eight years ago and the innocent lives that were lost. Let us also remember the victims of the March 11, 2004 train bombings in Madrid, and all the other innocent lives that have been taken through similar cowardly acts of terror. Let us also rededicate ourselves to community service through volunteerism.

May God continue to bless America and Spain.

Let us begin a moment of silence.
