REMARKS BY U.S. AMBASSADOR TO SPAIN GEORGE
L. ARGYROS |
This exhibit clearly shows terrorism in its true light, as a tragedy inflicted upon innocent people. Ordinary citizens, and the people who serve to protect them -policemen, firemen, rescue workers-show the tragedy they are experiencing in their faces. The title of the exhibit is especially appropriate: parallel feelings, the feelings of all persons of good will. We Americans experienced the events of September 11th in shock and with a deep sense of sadness and concern. Spaniards have had these same feelings over terrorist attacks against innocent people. But, every day our two societies also show their will to hold onto and defend their values of democracy, multiculturalism and their belief in life. This exhibit also shows noble outpourings: compassion, solidarity, support, and the resolve to live, not to succumb, to retain democratic values under which different races, ethnic groups, religions and types of people can live together in a peaceful, prosperous society.. These images are proof of this, and I want to congratulate Spanish photographer Javier Prieto for having shown these feelings that our two societies share. I think this is what we should celebrate today: a tribute to the persons and families who suffered the attack, to the many who gave their lives trying to rescue others, and to the society of which they are part. We salute their resolve and our own to hold fast to the values in which we believe. Thank you all, Spaniards, Americans, and friends of other nationalities, for being here today. We know that we all stand together under these ideals. |
